6th National Competition for Needle Lace and Bobbin Lace
The Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and the Burano Lace Museum present the 6th National Competition for Needle Lace and Bobbin Lace, with the theme “THE SKY” in its dual aspects:
- the reality of Creation, from the Big Bang that started everything to the stars, sun, moon, planets and galaxies; the concreteness of its immensity, its atmosphere, space exploration, and, more down to earth, the multicoloured iridescence of the aurora borealis, of a clear and bright sky or a cloudy, stormy sky, pale at dawn or fiery at sunset;
- the imagination and virtuality of the spirit, of poetry, philosophy, art, faith and folly; we imagine the sky as populated with angels and saints; it will open for the Apocalypse; we pray to “our father who is in Heaven”, we sing about it (Gino Paoli’s Il cielo in una stanza, Lucio Dalla’s Il cielo, Bowie’s Starman), it comes up in sayings – “in seventh heaven”, “reach for the sky”.
The competition aims to promote on a national scale a fine hand craft which, today more than ever, is threatened with extinction.
NOTE
Potential entrants are reminded to ensure their work is assigned to one of the competition categories – traditional or contemporary – because sometimes items do not coincide with the judges’ understanding of the categories.
For clarification, a lace item is considered “traditional” when the technique and stitches used produce an item which may even be three-dimensional, but which has no need of other complementary designs to exist or to be understood; on the other hand items in the “contemporary” category need elements other than the lace itself to complete the artistic effect the artist desires. It is therefore not the question of monochrome or multicoloured which classifies and characterises a piece, but the installation it requires.
The competition is open to original, hand-crafted works, and is divided into the following sections:
- Needle lace
– subsection “traditional” (in that it reflects tradition in terms of technique, colour and design);
– subsection “contemporary” (in that the interpretation uses coloured yarns and a variety of materials). - Bobbin lace
– subsection “traditional” (in that it reflects tradition in terms of technique, colour and design);
– subsection “contemporary” (in that the interpretation uses coloured yarns and a variety of materials).
